1. Decide what you actually need
Before you post anything, write down the three or four things that decide whether someone can do the job: which days and shifts you need covered, whether they can reliably reach job sites, and how much cleaning experience you expect. Keep this list short. Everything you ask applicants later should map back to it.
2. Make applying take under two minutes
Most hourly applicants apply from their phone. A long form or a request to email a résumé loses people. Ask for name, a way to reach them, and a few multiple-choice questions. If you have Spanish-speaking applicants in your area, offer the form and the ad in Spanish too.
3. Reply quickly
People who apply to cleaning jobs often apply to several companies at once. A reply the same day, with a clear next step, tends to beat a better offer that arrives three days later. Even a short automatic email with a link to book a time helps.
4. Ask everyone the same job-related questions
Using the same few questions for every applicant makes comparison easier and keeps the process consistent. Stick to what relates to the work: availability, transportation, experience. Avoid questions about age, family, health, religion or immigration status.
5. Book interviews instead of playing phone tag
A booking link lets applicants pick a time that suits them and puts it on your calendar. It removes the back-and-forth of text messages and cuts the time between applying and meeting you.
6. Send reminders
No-shows are a familiar problem in hourly hiring. A reminder the day before, and another a couple of hours ahead, asking people to confirm, makes it clear whether the interview is still on.
7. Keep simple records
Write down who applied, when, and what happened next. It helps you see which ads and which questions bring good applicants and gives you a record if you ever need one.
A note on rules. Hiring rules vary by state and city, and some places regulate how automated tools can be used in hiring. This is general information, not legal advice. Check with an employment attorney or your state labor agency for your situation.
